The 90’s continues to
be hailed as ground breaking, having produced some of RNB & SOUL’s greatest
HITS and SUPER ARTISTS. A strong emergence of the some of the best boy and girl
bands like BOYZ II MEN, JODECI, SWV, TLC, SILK, SHAI, DRU HILL, EN VOQUE,
BROWNSTONE, COLOUR ME BADD, XSCAPE, SOUL 4 REAL and many more characterised
what was the strongest decade for RNB & SOUL bands.
Back here home in SA,
producers where determined not to be left behind and the hard work paid of with
the creation of one of the most successful and lasting genres of them all
labelled “KWAITO” which gave birth to super talented artists and groups like
THEBE LENYORA, MDU MASILELA, ARTHUR MAFOKATE, TROMPIES, BONGO MAFFIN, BOOM
SHAKA, who were to remain engraved in many a fans hearts long after their
prime.
The 90’s was also a
decade that cemented legendary and iconic status to artists who actually rose
to stardom from the 80’s like the best artist of all time and King of Pop,
MICHAEL JACKSON, and other Super Mega artists like MARIAH CAREY, WHITNEY
HOUSTON, CELINE DION, JAMES INGRAM, BABYFACE, KEITH SWEAT, KEITH WASHINGTON,
PEABO BRYSON, MICHAEL MCDONALD, ANITA BAKER, PHIL COLLINS, MICHAEL BOLTON…the
list is amazingly endless.
HIP HOP although born
in the late 70’s was only really now taking off and getting mainstream
attention and produced what was termed “GANSTA RAP” made famous by larger than
life rappers like SNOOP DOGG, DR DRE, ICE CUBE, TUPAC, NOTORIUS BIG, SEAN PUFFY
COMBS, JAY-Z, NAS, FRESH PRINCE AND DJ JAZZY JEFF, MC HAMMER, LUDACRIS, MC
LYTE, QUEEN LATIFAH, LEFT EYE, LIL KIM, WU TANG CLAN, DMX and so many more.
Who can forget super
